Mexico received a positive send-off ahead of the World Cup after thrashing Serbia 5-1 at the Nemesio Diez stadium. The score will go far to settle Mexican fan’s nerves as the competition approaches – but until the 34th minute, things looked very different.
Serbia took the lead in the 19th minute through Petar Stanic, and it looked like Mexico were simply unable to keep up with Serbia’s early pace. Johan Vásquez came through in the 34th minute, however, scoring with a header, and just minutes before half-time, Stefan Bukinac (of Serbia) scored an own goal, giving Mexico a 2-1 lead.
That was when Serbia lost grip of the game. Mexico’s third came from Raul Jimenez, then another own goal from Adem Avdic, with the 5th goal for Mexico coming from a long-range strike from Luis Chávez. Fans erupted, with fireworks set off at the stadium after the final whistle blew, Reuters reported.
It should, however, be mentioned as it was not a perfect match from Mexico. They profited from a pair of own goals, and it’s unlikely this sort of “gift” will be available to them in the World Cup. Nonetheless they did what was needed having gone behind: they made it to half-time in the game, capitalising on their momentum and making the second-half an awful lot easier than the first.
This is one of those results that might catch the eye from a betting standpoint, without amounting to too much. Mexico, of course, will be a natural public interest because of the home factor. Five goals in the last warm-up contest and, suddenly, the spotlight is on you. Still, bettors should be careful. International friendlies tell you something, but they also lie to you.

What Will Be Next?
Mexico now turns their attention to their World Cup opener with South Africa. Of course, it is a completely different test: Friendly football and tournament football are two animals apart.
Still, Mexico wrapped up their preparation in a positive way. Five goals, a fightback from a losing position and something for the home crowd to cling to ahead of the World Cup. Not everything was perfect. It was ample enough as a final warmup result, though.
