If you’re wondering whether you can enjoy the highs of a casino on your visit to New Zealand, then absolutely Yes! But hold your horses; gambling in New Zealand isn’t your average run-of-the-mill experience.
Gambling in New Zealand has a long and exciting history. The country’s origins in gambling can be traced to the European settlers and their gambling traditions in the 1830s.
While gambling in New Zealand continued to enrich itself throughout history, land-based casinos only emerged in the 1990s. New Zealand takes gambling seriously, and I mean consciously and seriously. Gambling in New Zealand is a unique experience, and its guidelines, regulations, policies, and even support services to address the addiction problem all encompassed in the form of the updated Gambling Act of 2003.
The Gambling Act of 2003 regulates all the gambling industries in the country. It aims to balance responsible gambling for entertainment and minimizing the harm caused by gambling. The Act establishes a framework to ensure that gambling is conducted fairly, responsibly, and with a primary and conscientious focus on gambling harm reduction. These measures include age restrictions, self-exclusion programs, and provisions to help those struggling with gambling addiction.
For example, there are only 6 land-based casinos in Ireland, so players prefer to play the top 10 Irish online casinos through the Internet instead of traveling to a neighboring city to play poker.
Critical Guidelines For Casinos Under The Gambling Act You Should Know
The guidelines and regulations in The Gambling Act of 2003 ensure your and the casino’s safety, and the provisions are strictly maintained and should be adhered to. It’s pretty exciting to be assured of a fair and secure gambling experience, but let’s go over some of the critical points you need to know if you’re interested in visiting any casinos in New Zealand.
Licensing and Regulations
The Act outlines requirements for obtaining licenses to operate gambling activities, including casinos. Casinos must meet strict criteria and adhere to responsible gambling practices. So, you can be assured that any safe casino you visit is verified and won’t be out for your money unfairly.
Responsible and Conscientious Gambling
The Act places a strong emphasis on responsible gambling. It requires all gambling operators to provide players with information and resources while explaining the risks to help them make sensible decisions concerning their gambling habits. Fast paying casinos must also offer self-exclusion programs to individuals who wish to restrict their access to gambling facilities.
Age Restrictions
The Act has also established an age restriction to protect minors from the harmful effects of gambling. So, if you’re under 20, you’d better forget about participating in ANY gambling activities in New Zealand
. Your big pay-out dreams are out of the question.
Prohibition on Credit Gambling
Casinos are generally not allowed to offer/allow credit to players. This regulation strictly prevents individuals from gambling on credit and aims for a healthier gambling experience.
Casino Regulations
The Act also sets explicitly clear-cut requirements for casino licenses, including the number and types of casino games that can be offered. It also includes rules and guidelines for responsible gambling programs for players with additional issues within the casinos.
Active Harm Minimization
The Gambling Act has also focused on minimizing the harm caused by problem gambling. It’s vital that casinos also identify and assist individuals who may be experiencing gambling harm. It also contains provisions for advertising and promotions so that they do not target vulnerable individuals.
Audit and Compliance
Casinos have to undergo regular audits and compliance checks to verify that they are operating within the bounds of the law and meeting their obligations under the Act.

SKYCITY Queenstown is located in the heart of Queenstown, which is very convenient to get there. Moreover, this casino offers an experience that is sophisticated and cherished. The size of the casino is a bit small compared with other Sky City casinos. However, this is a cool play to hang around on the weekend.

My wife and I took my 90 year old mother in law for a night out, at the Christchurch Casino. She had not been there since the earthquakes. The staff was just excellent with her and made a real fuss about her on the machines and in the bar, which she just loved. We ended up in the Valley Bar with live entertainment that was beyond excellent. A great night out for all of us

This is a stand-alone casino in New Zealand. There are several machines and tables with a variety of options for all levels of play. The Casino’s Grand Bar and Café also serves lovely modern New Zealand cuisine at great prices. This is a great place to spend both of day and the nightlife.
I've been a computer gaming enthusiast since I was a kid, and after working as a freelancer for several New Zealand magazines I continue to be a gamer and became editor-in-chief of DashTickets and write about New Zealand, tourism and gaming. I am a big fan of research and analytical approach in preparing publications.
