Rugby Betting in NZ: The Basics

Thankfully, offshore sportsbooks are still able to operate legally in New Zealand, and this means that any casino winnings you get from your sports bets are not subject to tax. All of the sites on this page allow you to set up an account in New Zealand dollars too, which means you don’t need to worry about paying any FX fees.

If you are looking specifically for licencing, you’ll want to look for an MGA or UKGC licence. Tab New Zealand operates under a domestic DIA regulation, so things are slightly different, but what doesn’t change is that all of the sites recommended on this page take responsible gambling seriously, offer fair odds, a large variety of markets, and quick cash outs.

One other thing to be aware of is that in New Zealand you will usually see decimal odds used (1.80, for example, returns NZ$1.80 for every dollar you wager), and this equates to a NZ$0.80 profit.

Margins on major tests usually sit in the region of around 4-6%, while NPC and Heartland Shield markets, especially early in the week, can sometimes reach 6-8% before line-ups are officially confirmed.

Five Tips for New Zealand Rugby Punters

If you’re new to rugby betting, there are some things to be aware of that make it a little bit different from other sporting markets. Below, I’ll run you through five tips I’d suggest having a read of before betting.

  1. Check Weather and the Referee: You’d be amazed at just how much this actually matters to the game. In general, wind above 20 km/h and heavy rain tend to reduce the number of tries every game and shift the value toward unders. Referee penalty averages are publicly available too. These averages tend to move totals a lot more than most bettors account for.
  2. Shop Tuesday Lines: Most markets open before team sheets drop. This means prices on starting players can actually be quite generous before injury news drops. You’d be amazed at how much a half-point handicap difference between sites adds up over the course of a season.
  3. Split Your Accounts by Function: I’d recommend having a few different betting accounts and place your bets dependent on what you are betting on. I’d choose Betway for in-play, Betcash out, Bet365, or Pinnacle for the best pre-match value. Don’t forget to always shop around and compare odds.
  4. Limit Your Bet Builder Legs: Every time you add a new leg, you multiply the bookie’s margin into the ticket – and, in my opinion, without a promo covering the downside, four legs is a pretty reasonable limit.
  5. Bet a Fixed Percentage: Rugby runs all year round across NPC, Super Rugby Internationals, and the World Cup, and I’d suggest trying to keep each bet at around 2% of your total bankroll. Avoid staking anything more than 5% on finals, and both of these help to keep you in the game even when you are going through a losing streak.
Gambling Addiction Warning

Gambling should only ever be viewed as a form of fun; entertainment, and never a way to make money, or for financial gain. If you find yourself chasing losses, unable to stop, or expecting to win, you may be exhibiting signs of problem gambling. If, at any point, you feel that you have a gambling problem, stop immediately, check out our Responsible Gambling page, and reach out to organisations and charities like New Zealand’s Problem Gambling Foundation. Help and support is available.
