Gambling digest for April 19

In another roundup of gambling news, we’ve gathered the most relevant events from the world of gambling and betting for you. This month continues to be packed with essential developments in the gambling industry, from legislative changes to new online casino trends. Dive into our digest to keep updated with the latest news and trends in this dynamic field.

Fighting Illegal Online Gambling

Last summer, Australia and New Zealand hosted the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) reported on its actions against illegal gambling during the tournament.

In the run-up to the Women’s World Cup and during the tournament, 200 offshore services were checked, and 21 were investigated. On closer inspection, three of these services did not breach gambling regulations. In contrast, during the investigation, the remaining 18 services were found to violate the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

Three of these 18 services withdrew from the Australian market, restricting access for Australian users. The remaining 15 services blocked their sites at the ACMA’s request after being issued formal warnings.

ACMA member and head of online gambling Carolyn Lidgerwood said that the sites were not licensed to provide betting services in Australia, and some even offered types of gambling banned in Australia:

Carolyn Lidgerwood said: “Illegal gambling sites often take advantage of high-profile sporting events to push their services on fans. These sites also lack any of the consumer protection that licensed betting providers in Australia provide. Using such sites is more than gambling as you have no rights, and even if you win, you may never see the money.”

Jersey City Woman Wins $200,000 On Tipico’s New Online Platform

A Jersey City resident won $200,000 playing Jin Ji Bao Xi Endless Treasure online at Tipico Casino, proving that the brand’s differentiation strategy to attract more women to its app is paying off. In April, a Jersey City, New Jersey resident won $200,000 playing the Jin Ji Bao Xi Endless Treasure slot on Tipico Casino’s online platform. The news comes from a new, female-focused differentiated casino strategy that will launch in the fall of 2023.

The winner, who wished to remain anonymous, initially thought she had won $20,000. When she double-checked, she “immediately screamed” as she realized “it was $200,000, not $20,000.”

Play’n Go Has Implemented A Deal With Betmgm In Pennsylvania

Play’n Go received its license from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on March 27 this year and, shortly after, expanded its partnership with Rush Street Interactive (RSI) in the state in April. The deal thus makes BetMGM the second operator and provider in Pennsylvania.

Play’n Go CEO Magnus Olsson said:

“We are delighted to extend our partnership with BetMGM to a fourth U.S. state and look forward to continued success. We have always been committed to a safe, regulated industry to ensure a sustainable future for all of us. BetMGM shares our vision and is, therefore, an ideal partner for us. We will continue our mission to have a strong presence in all regulated markets around the world and look forward to new growth opportunities in the future, in the U.S. and beyond.”

It’s worth noting that Play’n Go has been actively pursuing deals of late:

  • NetBet Denmark announced a partnership with Play’n Go in Denmark
  • In Spain, the company has agreed with Betsson

Pennsylvania also released its gambling revenue figures for March, reporting a record monthly total of $554.6 million for the state, which surpassed New Jersey.

Gambling Boom In Brazil

The attention to Brazil is not surprising, as the country is now among the top 10 global markets for sports betting, writes Bloomberg.

The country’s parliamentarians decided to authorize online betting activities and casinos in 2018. Within five years, quite a few well-known companies entered the market, including Bet365, Entain’s SportingBet LTD, and Betfair. However, many were stopped by the lack of clear rules. And so, last year, the president decided to introduce them. In particular, the country introduced a license fee of $5.9 million with a term of five years and a tax of 12% on GGR.

The hefty fees did not scare international business. One hundred thirty companies, including the industry’s leaders, expressed a preliminary desire to obtain a license. In particular, MGM is considering opening a joint venture in the country.

At the same time, other changes are predicted in the industry. According to Datahub Analytical, there are 1000 different gambling operators in the Brazilian market now, and to survive in the new conditions, many of them will have to unite.

Zobian was recognized as the best player of the US Poker Open 2024 series

WSOP bracelet winner Aram Zobian of the United States became the best player of the US Poker Open Series 2024.

In the series of 8 tournaments, Zobian got into the prize zone 4 times, and one of the tournaments even won. This result earned the player $613,540 in prize money for the series, to which he added another $25,000 for winning the overall leaderboard and the honorary USPO Golden Eagle trophy.

Also, Zobian’s performance at the US Poker Open 2024 has seen him move up the POY 2024 leaderboard, where he now sits in 15th place. Another American heads this leaderboard, David Coleman, who has won four tournaments in 2024.

Draftkings Invests In Artificial Intelligence Dealers

Online casinos have more “untapped potential” than sports betting, he said

“We are now investing in our live dealer products, which will take many years of effort. But it’s something that I think will be interesting even in the distant future,” Robins said.

He added that the company is looking to improve the customer experience through new technologies, among other things. In particular, artificial intelligence.

“Imagine you’re playing with a live dealer, but it’s a dealer with AI,” the top manager suggested.

Now, the development and implementation of artificial intelligence in various fields has become even more relevant – especially after the launch of ChatGPT and Midjourney.

“We have been focusing on machine learning for a long time. The companies that will benefit most from such technologies will be those with strong data security, and I think it will be companies of larger scale,” Robins added.

He noted that AI will help improve personalization in user interaction, and the speed of response to customer requests will increase significantly. Artificial intelligence will be no less valuable in sports betting. In particular, the company is going to introduce a ChatGPT-style user interface.

According to Robins, artificial intelligence generally opens up a wide range of opportunities, including the fact that it will eventually help reduce the cost of implementing and maintaining new projects.

“AI has the potential to transform the gaming industry, as it has already done with many others. The fact that we’re starting from a position of scale and with such a robust data set gives us the opportunity to capitalize even more on that,” he continued, adding.
