Recently, I’ve had a LOT of people asking me my opinnions about the best sports betting sites online, and that’s why, for the past month, I’ve spent a huge amount of time reviewing 20 of the biggest online sports betting operators.

I tested the withdrawals on a Tuesday morning and kept screenshots of every cashier receipt for my notebook. 888sport processed NZ$250 back to my Visa within four hours, while BetVictor took just under two full days – both both of those time-frames are acceptable for a VISA withdrawal, to be honest. How Do We Rate Sports Betting Sites
When I say a bookie is one of the best in NZ, it’s because I’ve actually bet with them – not because I’ve just skimmed their bonuses and promotions page! Before any site makes it into one of my “recommended tables”, I put it through its paces:

Rugby League

They post Super Rugby lines a day earlier than most of their competitors, and they also price alt spreads down to one-point increments. An early-payout rule triggers once a side leads by 17, too, so last year’s Chiefs choke still paid my ticket, for example. If you consider adding competitive margins under 6%, you can even find yourself having a home for every union or league bet you make!
Sports Betting Odds
One of the ways I personally like to frame odds, is viewing them as price tags on probability! You only really need to understand one format – but it’s still something that catches a lot of punters out, so I’ll briefly explain how they work.
Decimal odds show total return – including your stake – so a NZ$20 bet at 3.40 pays NZ$68, for example. Fractional odds like 7/2 express only the amount of profit you’ll make; you simply add the stake after the maths is figured out. Moneyline odds on the other hand pin everything to NZ$100: +250 means win NZ$250 on NZ$100, while –150 means stake NZ$150 to win NZ$100. Virtually every online sportsbook allows you to change between these different odds formats, and this is usually done in the “settings” part of your account.
Bet Types And Markets
I start every session by mapping out which bet type fits my confidence level and bankroll for that day. Having a structured approach keeps me from making impulse decisions when the odds start moving too fast – and it helps me to stay grounded, in a way. Here’s a look at some of the main bet types and markets:
Singles
I treat singles as the backbone of my betting plan, because they always allow me to isolate the risk level of every bet placed. Now, a correct single bet pays out according to the odds – so there are no other legs (selections) to worry about. Sometimes, I find that focusing on singles allows me to focus more on the selections in front of me; when I start placing multiples, I find it’s quite easy to start “drifting” focus-wise.
Accumulators
I still throw the occasional accumulator into my betting lineup, but to be honest, these days, I only place them when I’m confident on every leg. The bigger payouts can, however, turn a small stake into a monster hit – but just be aware that the odds are always very deceptive; you often think that it’s much more likely your selections will come in, than the probability of them doing so in reality!
System Bets
System bets like Trixies and Yankees let me soften the blow if one leg lets me down, so I use them sparingly – usually on markets like NBA parlays or cricket prop combos. A four-leg Canadian, for example, still returns a ¾ hit-rate, and this gives me a nice little buffer between singles and full-accumulator stakes. Naturally, the trade-off here is a higher entry cost, as you’re effectively placing multiple lines at once.
Live Betting
Live betting is always one of my favourite ways to bet – but I ONLY recommend it if you’re able to bet responsibly, and know what you’re doing, as it can be quite easy to let things get out of hand if you’re not careful. I tend to place live bets only when I have set pre-determined loss limits beforehand, and when it’s a market I’m comfortable with; tennis or rugby, for example.
These are the core bet types and markets I rely on most, and understanding the basics of how each one works has allowed me to keep my win-rate in the +EV territory.
My Sports Betting Tips And Strategy
A rock-solid routine beats hot tips every week, and I’d be VERY cautious of “punter services” where they claim/promise to deliver you the best tips every week. (If they were truly so good, why would they ever need to share them?) A solid strategy is usually more than enough, and mine begins with a ring-fenced bankroll. I treat my betting roll like something kind of sacred – and this (usually) prevents me from spending more than intended to. I highly recommend you do the same before you begin betting.
Here’s a Quick-Fire Checklist you can print out/save to use before you bet:
- Set a season bankroll and divide it into 1 % units.
- Compare odds at three sportsbooks, NOT one, before accepting any price.
- Track every bet you place in a sheet: the stake, odds, result, and your reasoning.
- Never chase; if you drop three units in a session, walk away.
- Review losses weekly and adjust only after spotting errors that you appear to be making consistently.
If you manage to lock in these five habits, you’ll already be ahead of 95% of pundits – and these really are my “swear-by-betting-rules” I genuinely follow each and every time I place a bet.
